There were contrasting fortunes for the rivals. United acheived their highest placing for almost two decades whereas Sunderland were relegated.

Newcastle had started 1969/70 in indifferent form and when Sunderland came to visit just after the Guy Fawkes celebrations they were down in 13th place. Sunderland were faring even worse and were bottom.
The first half was a scrappy, even affair with neither side fully getting to grips with the strong wind although both sides had decent penalty claims turned down.
Then with half-time approaching United's Consett born teenager Dyson (playing in his first derby) let fly from 25 yards. His shot skimmed off the head of Heslop and nestled in the top corner of the net.
In the second period Sunderland meekly surrendered.
Bob Moncur made an excellent run down the left and when he crossed Davies finished off after Dyson had mis-kicked (51st).
Three minutes from time Dyson added a third and Sinclair almost got a fourth but his shot hit the angle.
There were a couple of flashpoints in the game. Ollie Burton and Joe Baker received a lecture after a dust-up and there was a "free for all" after Davies crudely barged Montgomery over during which the Welshman and Harris appeared to exchange blows.

The return game at Roker Park on Good Friday was the 100th Derby game.
By this time United had climbed to 6th having being beaten only once in their last fourteen outings although they rarely managed to win on foreign soil. Sunderland were still bottom, four points away from safety.
The first period was all United but with Colin Todd superbly marshalling his defence and Montgomery performing heroics in goal half-time arrived with no score.
Davies did get the ball in the net when he barged the Sunderland custodian over the line but Wyn was a few decades late with his approach.
In the second-half United went ahead when Jimmy Smith blasted in an unstoppable volley [51st].
We continued to dominate but failed to add to Jinky's goal. Fifteen minutes from time we paid for our profligacy when Park's shot bounced in off the underside of the crossbar with Tueart following in to make sure
