The new decade started with the same kit which the club had worn at the end of the 1960's with the addition of the badge.
United's classic 1970's kit; the badge moves to the middle and the socks get hoops. Hooped socks had a surge of popularity in the 1950's but had rarely been seen since.
Minimal change with the hooped socks being replaced by standard white socks with a couple of thin stripes at the top.
These became the standars socks for a number of years; although occasionally the colours were reversed and they were black with a couple of white stripes.
In line with most clubs of the time the shirt gets a black "V-neck" collar.
A subtle but significant revamp as - for the first time - the design includes references to the shirt manufacturer. There is a Bukta logo on the shirt and the stripes down the shirt sleeves and the shorts are made up of the Bukta motif.
The players were furious that the club had not informed them and felt as if they were being "used" and "exploited"; acting as advertisements and getting no recompense. They wanted a payment into their players pool
Geoff Nulty even approached one of the Bukta directors to put over the player's concerns.
