The euphoria of promotion had been tempered by the retirement of Keegan and the resignation of Cox. Fans feared for the worst but most were pleasantly surprised to see Jackie Charlton installed as the new manager.

A three game winning streak at the start of the season took United to the top of the table, but it wasn't long before the goals were arriving with increasing regularity at the wrong end.

Charlton started to pack the midfield and defence and was apoplectic after the crazy 5-5 draw at Loftus Road.

Concerns over Charlton's tactics soon began to reach the surface as the side became increasingly defensive minded and the mercurial talents of Beardsley and Waddle were sidelined to accommodate the Mavis and Tony show.

Waddle was in such good form that he gained England recognition but when it became apparent that he would leave at the end of the season the crowd turned on him.

Nottingham Forest (FA) and Ipswich (League) ended our Cup interest.

A thirteenth placed finish was acceptable and to an extent Charlton had done his job. But his approach and tactics had alienated players and fans alike.
