The display of support by the fans after the Wembley humiliation led to a plethora of promises about putting things right and possibly the worst football record ever made. However although on their day they could beat the best they were also capable of wilting against the worst.
We made a decent start to the season and actually got as high as 6th at one point, but a glut of injuries soon put an end to that. From then on a failure to string a decent set of results together followed by what was now becoming an all to familiar end of season collapse led to another 15th place finish.
Moncur had been sold off to Sunderland and his young replacement Keeley struggled to fill his shoes; so although United plundered a healthy 59 League goals they conceded 72 (a total only matched by relegated Chelsea).
Micky Burns (before the season) and Tommy Craig and Geoff Nulty (in December) were the other main arrivals. It was to be the last season for Willie McFaul (semi-retired) and Frank Clark (free transfer)
Cup exits at the hands of Third Division Walwall and Fourth Division Chester heightened the gloom and the fans turned on manager Harvey. It was to be a depressing (first) end to his managerial career.
