If you are looking for a season that sums Newcastle up perfectly this could be it. They were 2nd in November and finished 15th. They fought like lions to get to the Cup Final before meekly surrendering like lambs to Liverpool. The supporters were praised as the best and slaughtered as the worst. The players were hailed as heros and condemned as thugs.

The FA Cup run had everything as United veered from the wonderful to the woeful on a ten game trip to the Twin Towers. They thought that they'd made it; they hadn't. But who cares about the FA Cup; the Texaco Cup was ours after we disposed of Burnley in the only two-legged final with one leg.

The League Cup saw us fall at the second stage as usual but there was a sting in the tale. Birmingham were our vanquishers after a replay and we also met them three times in the Texaco Cup and twice in the league . Seven games in total, six of them within a six week period. A feud developed between the clubs which led to a player from both sides receiving serious injuries.
