A season of transition at SJP as Joe Harvey looked to remodel the attacking half of his team. Davies, Arentoft and Dyson followed Robson out the door whilst Hibbitt and Green were the notable additions to the already Supermac enhanced squad.
The much re-organised team got off to a bad start and hit rock bottom by the end of October; Harvey was not helped by a bad run of injuries and the suspensions that resulted from the imposition of the new disciplinary system.
The signing of Tony Green proved to be the catalyst for a revival and although the team remained inconsistent they took some meaty scalps along the way.
The FA Cup saw us drawn against Isthmian League Hereford and there is not much else needs to be said about that. A game was actually won in the League Cup as we beat Third Division Halifax but Arsenal hammered a weakened side in the next round.
United also entered the Texaco Cup for the first time and actually made it to the semi-finals where they lost to Brian Clough's Derby County, that seasons League Champions.
The arrival of exciting new players and an increased emphasis on attack was counterbalanced by increasing hooliganism leading to a small increase in the average attendance.
