United were defending their Fairs Cup and once again acquitted themselves well although the opposition was more home grown this time. Dundee united, FC Porto and Southampton were all despatched on the way to a Quarter final tie with Anderlecht.
With the Belgians winning their home leg 2-0 United had it all to do at SJP. United played brilliantly and had equalled the tie by half-time. Then in the 86th minute Dyson scored again and the crowd was in a state of euphoria. But within seconds a Burton clearance had rebounded at the feet of their Swedish star Gunner Nordahl who slotted home to take the visitors through on the away goals rule
It was a reasonably solid League campaign with a highest placing of 6th and a lowest of 15th. As in the previous two seasons we were reliant on our home form although we were at least collecting a few away draws.
No joy in the cups with immediate exits at the hands of Southampton (FA) and Sheffield United without even scoring a goal.
New arrivals were Jimmy Smith and David Ford whilst Sinclair and Scott both moved on. Saddest news was the premature retirement of Geoff Allan through injury.
