Having struggled so badly in the previous campaign, Newcastle were one of the favourites for relegation. But, despite only adding Scotsmen Jim Scott and Jackie Sinclair to the squad United gave a much better account of themselves in the League finishing in their highest position since 1959/60.

It could have been better if we hadn't lost seven and drawn four of our last twelve games. At the end of February we were in 5th, only 2 points behind eventual champions Manchester City. Indeed The Citizens won the League on the very last day of the season in a thrilling 4-3 victory at SJP.

Overall we were excellent on Tyneside. The City defeat was one of only two that season and it was our best home record in the top flight since 1949/50, unfortunately our away record was dire; our worst since the 1930s.

There were more embarrasing Cup exits at the hands of Lincoln and Carlisle; but the end of the season brought a major, unexpected surprise. Qualification rules for the Fairs Cup only allowed one club per City so despite finishing below Everton, Tottenham and Arsenal we got a ticket for Europe.
