Apart from the intoduction of teenager Bryan Robson Harvey relied on the same players who had finished so strongly in the previous season. Craig and Clark established themselves at full-back and a formidable half-back line of Anderson, McGrath and Iley garnered a consistency that had previously been missing. United were never out of the top six all season.
They were already in second when they embarked on a record breaking seven match winning run up to the turn of the year. They finished in top spot; clinching the title in front of almost 60,000 spectators by beating rivals Bolton. It was their sixteenth home win of the season; only one game being lost at home.
Alan Suddick earned himself a booking for debagging a Bury defender in a controversial game at SJP and The Magpies ensured that there were no distractions by getting themselves knocked out of both cup competitions at the first hurdle.
