Statistically and comparatively the season was a grave disappointment; the League position had slipped and Sunderland had been promoted.
During the summer Harvey had recruited Gordon Marshall, Colin Taylor and Ollie Burton and the squad looked strong. But an excellent start of four wins out of five was followed by a disastrous run in which they lost nine games out of eleven; by mid November they were in 18th.
Harvey responded by buying Sunderland captain Stan Anderson and Cardiff winger Trevor Hockey. They helped inspire a terrific run of twelve wins in sixteen games which took The Magpies to the edge of the promotion battle.
