Former captain Joe Harvey was brought back as manager and found the club in a "terrible state".
Despite getting off to a poor start (only one win in the first six matches) the team gradually began to improve' although they never achieved the consistency required to seriously challenge for promotion. They finished seventh.
Harvey was gradually beginning to reshape the side with some excellent signings (Iley, Hilley, McGarry and Penman) being suplemented by more of the youth team (Moncur ). It was a more stable team (28 used) but injuries to key players like Barrie Thomas and Bill Thompson proved crucial
They were mauled by The Canaries in the FA Cup 4th and failed to navigate the first hurdle in the League Cup, losing to Orient.
