Newcastle were installed as hot favourites to gain promotion as a result of their improving form during the war years and their financial clout strengthened by booming attendances. In the first half of the season United, with their star-studded forwards and a solid half-back line, lived up to their billing and hit top spot.
The highest attendances in the country, 13-0 record victory and record transfer moves both out and in kept United in the headlines. But a mixture of bad weather, intra-club conflicts and a distracting FA Cup run led to promotion being missed.
They failed mainly as a result of their home form (winning only half their games) where they sometimes struggled in front of the feverish and expectant locals.
In the FA Cup they reached the semi-final only to suffer a demoralising defeat against eventual winners Charlton; the result significantly impacted by the growing rift between players. Dropped top goalscorer Charlie Wayman demanded a transfer whilst Joe Harvey and Len Shackleton went on strike.
