United won the Championship for the first time in their history finishing one point ahead of second placed Everton. Not only were they successful, but they also did it in style. Playing intricate attacking football that set them apart from the still prevalent kick and rush style of other teams they became the most famous team in the land.
Newcastle conceded only 33 goals that season, the best record in Division 1 and our our best ever total. We also notched 72 goals in the 34 League games, failing to score only four times, making us top scorers as well.
We were in the running throughout the season and nine wins in the last eleven games secured our first ever trophy as we pipped the scousers on the final day of the season. We only drew two games all season; winning 22 and losing 9. The seven game run of victories in November and December was a record until the Keegan years.
It could have been an even better season as United came mighty close to winning the double. They reached the Final for the first time before losing to Aston Villa who had already won the trophy on three previous occasions. They were two evenly matched sides and United had done the double over them in the League, but he Valiants more direct pacey game proved more suitable to the wide open spaces at the Palace
