Another storming start to the campaign brought five wins in the first seven games, but unlike the previous campaign there was a much greater level of consistency and Unted finished 4th six points behind The Wednesday who were champions again

Newcastle found goals easier to come by with Big Bill Appleyard leading the attack ably assisted by Howie and Orr.

There was disappointment in the FA Cup with United knocked out at the first time of asking by Bury.

The average attendance rose slightly to 18,749 with the Tyne Wear derby again proving the biggest attraction with 30,000 turning up.

The side was getting more settled with seven players making 30 or more appearances. New arrivals included James Howie, and Andy McCombie who was involved in a sensational and controversial record £700 move from Sunderland.

Kingsley moved to West Ham and Cherlie Watts returned between the sticks.
