1987-88 Season - November

A dismal defeat at Luton has the players locked in the dressing room again but they remain unbeaten for the rest of the month.

Saturday 07 Nov 1987 - Luton [A] - Div 1 - Lost 0-4

In front of only 7,638 home fans at Kenilworth Road (away fans being barred) United took to the plastic pitch in their brand new all blue change kit. But their faces were a different colour after they were completely outplayed in a disastrous defeat which saw them drop to 18th.

McFaul chose to hold a 40 minute post match inquest with his players rather than attend the post match press conference.

On the same day Supermac's Huddersfield are beaten 10-1 by Man City.

Saturday 14 Nov 1987 - Derby [H] - Div 1 - Drew 0-0

Returning Derby manager Arthur Cox received a standing ovation before the game in what was his first visit since leaving the club.

United were in excellent form but 38-year-old Peter Shilton turned back the years with a vintage performance in what was his 800th League game to deny United the victory.

Saturday 21 Nov 1987 - QPR [A] - Div 1 - Drew 1-1

Back on plastic again and deprived of the services of Paul Goddard McFaul experimented with a 3-6-1 formation with Mira asked to play up on his own and Albert Craig and Ian Bogie making their first starts of the campaign.

A Kenny Wharton og gave The Hoops a half-time lead and when Gazza got himself sent off for the second time in his short career the outlook looked bleak. But Peter Jackson headed in a 77th minute equaliser.

Wednesday 25 Nov 1987 - Shrewsbury [H] - Simod - Won 2-1

7,787 hardy souls turned up fro the Simod Cup tie against Shrewsbury; United edging past the struggling 2nd Division side with a last minute strike from Mira.

Saturday 28 Nov 1987 - Charlton [H] - Div 1 - Won 2-1

Michael O'Neill made his first start for the club but The Magpies struggled throughout the game and were rather fortunate to get maximum points. The Londoners started much better and were ahead within six minutes but they lost their main inspiration [after only 16 minutes] when Colin Walsh suffered a broken leg after a typically robust challenge from John Anderson.

Fans in The Corner disgraced themselves by pelting the stricken player with missiles including coins and cans.

John Cornwell was the unlikely hero as he scored the equaliser on the stroke of half-time before setting Mira up for the winner. It was only the second home win of the season.
