1987-88 Season - June/July

June

Liverpool offer £1.5 million for Peter Beardsley but United turn it down. United are after £2 million but it is thought the Scousers are not prepared to go the distance on a player who only has a year left on his contract.

United maintain that they want Pedro to stay, but as he is not prepared to sign a new contract and he only has a year left on his current one it s in the best interests if he leaves at a fee that is acceptable to the club.

Ian Stewart [Portsmouth], Joe Allon [Swansea] are allowed to leave on free transfers.

United offer Wimbledon £200,000 for Welsh international Glyn Hodges but the offer is turned down. The club seem prepared to go to an independent tribunal.

Meanwhile work continues to demolish the old West Stand in preparation for the fan dubbed"Peter Beardsley" stand.

July

Glyn Hodges signs from Wimbledon for £300,000

United "also ran" Albert Craig makes a shock claim that Beardsley has been "driven out by the attitude of players not fit to lace his boots" accusing them of jealousy

Beardsley's transfer is held up as United stall over money Pedro thinks he is entitled to. Newcastle claim other clubs are interested with Spurs being suggested as likely suitors.

Beardsley finally moves for £1.8 million (a record for a transfer between two British clubs).

John Cornwell arrives drom Fourth Division Orient for £50,000 (with the fee potentially increasing to £90,000 depending upon appearances)

McFaul is prepared to go back for Aberdeen's attacker John Hewitt who turned down a move to Tyneside in the previous summer.

United lose 2-1 to Brondby and a shock omission is David McCreery who has not yet signed a new contract.
