McFaul's second season in charge proved to be a lot more difficult than his first with United only pulling away from the relegation zone in their last few matches.

Despite the fact that the crowd was becoming increasingly vocal in their disapprovement McFaul was largely unscathed as they directed most of their anger towards the board for their perceived lack of investment in the club.

With money being set aside for the new stand McFaul's transfer budget was tight and it was imperative that he used his limited funds carefully.

£240,000 on youngster Darren Jackson seemed a trifle extravagent but his next three buys effectively saved the season. Andy Thomas, Peter Jackson and Paul Goddard were all excellent purchases. The final buy, Albert Craig, was not so memorable.

The sale of Billy Whitehurst was not mourned by many, if any.
