JackCharlton allegedly had almost a million burning a hole in his pocket but had only forked out £50,000 to bring in Old Trafford reserve Alan Davies.
At the end of July a fee was agreed with Ipswich for Eric Gates but Charlton baulked at the personal terms that wurzel wished for. When Sunderland stepped in to sign him the fans were none too impressed.
A week before the season started United played a friendly against Sheffield United; only 4,982 bothered to turn up. Charlton was subjected to some less than constructive criticism throughout the match and as soon as the whistle had blown he stormed into the boardroom to inform Seymour of his resignation
"The crowd will get exactly what they want" explained Jack. "If they want to get rid of Jack Charlton then they have done it.... there is no way I'm going to change my mind."
Seymour kept his head in the sand and hoped that he could persuade Charlton to rethink, but there was no way he was going to wind him back in.
