Summary
Another month of contrast in which defeat by Fourth Division Chester in a League Cup reply brought angry reactions from the Toon faithful; the only goal coming from "Jessie" James.
The first leg at SJP ended in a goalless draw with Grenville Millington performing superbly in goal for the side which had already knocked out Leeds.
Tony Bell made his debut between the sticks in the game at White Hart Lane but a classic blunder precipitated defeat and ended his professional career. Another defeat followed at Highfield Road before they were dumped by Chester in a tense struggle at Sealand Road.
United had gone four games without a goal but a much improved performance against Leeds saw them score three goals without reply in the second period.
Harvey made a big splash in the transfer market when he bought midfielders Tommy Craig and Geoff Nulty for a combined £230,000 fee. Both made their debuts in a 2-1 victory at Carlisle on Boxing Day which kept United in 9th
And lets not forget that our 3-0 home victory over Southampton in the Texaco Cup final meant that we retained this prestigious trophy in it's final year.
United's injury problems started to escalate with Cassiddy and Clark joining Hibbitt on the sidelines.
