During the summer McFaul wnt on a five week playing holiday to Vancouver. For the second season running the Irishman missed only one competitive game all season.
Martin Burleigh (20) [1 - 0]
Reserve 'keeper Martin Burleigh made one appearance in the 4-2 home victory over Coventry
David Craig (27) [40 - 1]
David Craig retained the right back slot and even managed to score a rare goal in a 3-3 draw at Stoke
Frank Clark (27) [44 - 0]
Frank Clark was an almost permanent fixture at left back although he also deputised at centre-back following Moncur's injury.
Took some abuse from the fans when things got a bit sticky in the New Year.
Ron Guthrie (27) [9 - 0]
Despite his popularity with the crowd Ron Guthrie continued to play second-fiddle to Frank Clark; but despite interest from a number of clubs he vowed to continue his fight for a place in the side.
Ray Ellison (19) [6 - 0]
Ray Ellison was another nineteen year old defender handed his debut during United's early season injury crisis. Unfortunately his 5 consecutive League appearances all resulted in defeats although he was on the winning side in the League Cup match against Halifax.
Ray lost his place when he was injured and no further competitive appearances
Keith Kennedy (20) [1 - 0]
Twenty year old left back Keith Kenneddy was the elder brother of future star Alan and he made his only ever appearance for the club in the 0-1 reverse at Nottingham in April
Bobby Moncur (26) [22 - 0]
Moncur's left leg was in plaster during the summer and although he played in the first few games he had been brought back too early and he was out from mid-September until January; returning for the Hereford disaster
Pat Howard (23) [36 - 0]
Pat Howard was signed in September for £23,000 from Fourth Division Barnsley with United needing extra cover but he was plunged straight into the first team due to United's injury crisis.
Did well enough to retain his place in the first eleven.
Ollie Burton (29) [21 - 0]
Struggling with the knee injury that would prematurely end his career Burton made his last appearances for The Magpies. His final game was the goalless draw at Huddersfield in January.
John McNamee (29) [2 - 0]
John McNamee made only 2 appearances before being allowed to join Arentoft at Blackburn in November for £15,000 despite Bobby Moncur suffering a bad injury
Derek Craig (19 ) [1 - 0]
Teenage Centre-back Derek Craig made his debut in the League Cup game at Arsenal; the 0-4 reverse his only competitive game for the club
Irving Nattrass (20) [24/4 - 1]
Playing mostly in midfield Nattrass established himself in the side as he took over the midfield ball winner role.

Terry Hibbitt (23) [39 - 3]
Signed from Leeds for a bargain £30,000 prior to the start of the season Hibbit had a great first season with people comparing him with past stars such as Ernie Taylor and George Eastham
Tommy Gibb (26) [27/3 - 1]
Tommy Gibb - continued his remarkable run of consecutive games until being relegated to the subs bench for the away match at Arsenal.
His relationship with some of the Gallowgate crowd was described as "beyond repair" and he was transfer listed . Accusations were made that he gave the old "V" sign in the home game against Man United but he claimed he was just waving his hands around. However he was restored to the team in February.
Tony Green (25) [29 - 2]
Joe Harvey tried to sign Tony Green during the summer but he had to wait until October 1971 to get his man. He made an instant impact, was named man of the match in nearly every match he played and was voted Player of the Year by the supporters.
Jim Smith (23) [1/3 - 1]
Jinky had an operation on a serious cartilage injury during the summer and he had to wait until October to make his first start.
Unfortunately during that game he did the cartliage in his other knee and only returned to make a cameo performance during March
David Young (26) - [8/1 - 0]
David Young, started the first 5 games of the season but lost his place to Nattrass and was used sparingly after that
Gordon Hodgson (19) [1 - 0]
Teenager who made his debut in the 1-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest in April
Malcolm MacDonald (21) [46 - 26]
Signed from Fulham for a record £150,000, the converted fullback soon proved his doubters wrong and his impressive goal scoring form saw him win his first cap.
Already there were suggestions that Mac might do more to contribute to the overall team play but he was having none of it; "they're trying to change me from a goalscorer to a footballer. I think it's wrong because it's impossible for me to be both".
John Tudor (25) [41/1 - 9]
Tudor was Supermac's foil for the majority of the season but his goal haul was disappointing
He lost his place to loanee Viv Busby during December but reclaimed the Number 10 shirt when he returned to Luton.
Stewart Barrowclough (19) [27/2 - 2]
Barrowclough had struggled to establish himself in the side in the previous season and a bout of homesickness led to a transfer request.
But he stayed and the departure of Keith Dyson meant he established himself on the right wing adding - as JH stated "a little bite to the number 7 shirt". Although when dropped at one point he was again on the verge of resubmitting his request.
Keith Dyson (20) [6/1 - 1]
Keith Dyson made only a handful of appearances before being sold to Blackpool as a £40,000 makeweight in the deal that brought Tony Green to Newcastle
Tommy Cassiddy (19) [6/4 - 3]
Despite being a Northern Ireland squad member Tommy Cassiddy was rarely called upon. Joe Harvey was convinced he would make it 'but only if we can get some weight off him. He drinks a lot of lemonade so we'll have to try and dry him out'
Gordon Hindson (21 ) [2 - 0]
Hindson only got two games before being sold to Luton in October.
Chris Guthrie (18) [3 - 0]
Brother of Ron, Chris Guthrie was an eighteen year old centre-forward, but made 2 of his 3 appearances in midfield. United also lost all the games he appeared in. One of 4 players who played their first and last match for the club during the season
Alex Reid (24) [12/7 - 0]
Midfielder Alex Reid was exchanged for Ian Mitchell in October 1971 and made a number of appearances without impressing
Viv Busby (22) [5 - 2]
Supermac's former strike partner at Luton - Viv Busby - was signed on a three month loan. He scored on his first 2 appearances - deputising for Tudor - but was not retained
Manager Harvey continued to break-up the Fairs Cup winning side with eight players being moved on in the first months of the season.
