1893/94 Season - November

Summary

November saw a difficult double header against League leaders Liverpool and an away match against bottom of the table Northwich Victoria.

Things started badly when they conceded ten goals in the two away fixtures but they won back some pride by holding the scousers to a goalless draw on Tyneside.

United were now tenth but had played only three times at home after ten games.

The next game was a daunting trip to leaders Liverpool and once again the journey had to be made on the morning of the match. It was "ideal football weather" but a disastrous day for United as they slumped to their heaviest defeat of the season.

Thompson equalised an early goal from Stott but the Liverpudlians scored twice more in the first half.

Only an inspired display of custodianship from Lowery kept the scoring down to two further second half goals.

First Division Sheffield United agreed to play a friendly "for the sake of auld lang syne"; that is they were paid for travelling expenses only. Such was the interest in the match that special excursions ran from Blyth, Bebside, Bedlington and Sunderland and the crowd of 4,00 brought in some much needed cash.

The scores were equal at half-time but The Tynesiders scored four goals without reply in the second half; Crate [2], Thompson [2] and triallist Milne got the goals

Despite their heavy defeat on Merseyside the directorate stuck with the same eleven for their return to the North West to take on bottom of the table Victoria. Only 400 people turned up; the lowest number to watch a competitive United match.

It was a stormy day and United started with the gale behind them. They dominated proceedings but could not find a way past custodian Hornley. Crate made the break through just before half-time

The second half was a wind-assisted lottery and the struggling Cheshire team ended up as 5-3 winners.

United's disappointing form resulted in a poor crowd to see the unbeaten League leaders despite a special train running from Blyth. Rogers was promoted to replaced the dropped Miller (who would never play for the club again)

United put in some "strict training" in the week before the match and the result was a much better performance and they were only thwarted by the magnificent Liverpool defence.

It was a hard fought game although at times it was "rife in roughness on the part of the visitors who used their weight unnecessarily on many occasions". The 'Pool's clean sheet was more impressive because a lack of 'keepers meant that half-back McQueen played the full match in the visitors citadel.

Thompson and the home fans thought he had opened the scoring from a corner in the first half, but the referee said the ball had not crossed the line.
