NUFC - 1990's Keepers

1990/91

Budgie Burridge was nudging 40 but he was still United's Numero Uno in the first season of the decade.

He played in every game of up until mid April but once Ossie - who wanted a much younger army - had taken over his days were numbered and he migrated to Scotland before the start of the following campaign.

Pavel Srniceck was only 22 when Jim Smith signed him from Banik Ostrava in 1991 and the Eagle had flown before he was handed his debut three months later. He kept a clean sheet that game and kept his place in the side until the campaign's end.

1991/92

Some calamitous 'keeping at the start of 1991/92 meant Pav lost his place to the less spectaculour but more solid Tommy Wright.

1992/93

An injury to Tommy in November 1992 allowed Pav back in to assist in the promotion push

1993/94

Keegan appeared to be unconvinced with both of his custodians and brought in Liverpool reserve Mike Hooper a few weeks into United's first Premiershop campaign.

Unfortunately after an encouraging start his well grounded demeanour resulted in Hoops making too many bloops and he was hounded out the side allowing the popular Czech to bounce back again.

1994/95

Pav remains in charge of the multicolored jersey with only a few sightings of the ginger giant .

1995/96

KKs next accept to solve his custodian conundrum was to pay out £1,575,000 for Reading's Shaka Hislop.

Shaka replaced Pavel as first choice at the start of the season but once again an injury gave Srnicek a route back into the side.

1996/97

Pavel gets the first half of the season before he is dropped and replaced by Shaka's in for the second half.

1997/98

Dalglish purchased Irishman Shay Given on a Bosman during the summer of 1996 and he took over between the posts.

Both Shaka and Pav left at the end of the 1997/98 campaign; their contracts having expired.

1998/99

Ruud Gullit stuck with Given but towards the end of 1998/99 he turned to Steve Harper and it was the Easington born player who got the nod for the Cup Final.

1999/0

With Given injured and the dreadlocked one appearing to lost faith in Harps and returned from his homeland with John Karelse.

Thrown in at the deep end he promptly conceded seven goals in his first two games and was dropped

Gullit brought back Tommy Wright back on loan from Man City before he resigned his post. Bobby Robson initially re-installed Steve Harper before Given returned towards the end of the campaign.
