NUFC - 1970's Attackers [Part 1]

Barrowclough Stewart RW Jul 1970 £33,000 Apr 1978 exch 261/28 28

Barnsley born Barrowclough joined United as a 19 year old and homesickness threatened to curtail his Tyneside career. But having overcome his initial problems he developed into a pacey, direct winger and did well enough to be called up for the Under 23's.

The more defensively minded Gordon Lee converted him into a right sided midfielder and he remained at the club until the close season of 1978 when he was part of McGarry's summer clearout.

Davies Wyn CF Oct 1966 £80,000 Aug 1971 £52,500 216 53

Wyn the leap was still terrorising the continentals in 1970/71 but domestically he was struggling to find the net; scoring only two goals in 37 appearances.

A new bandy legged Number 9 had arrived from Luton and Harvey decided that the toon wasn't big enough for the both of them. Davies moved to Man City before the start of the following campaign at the age of 29.

Dyson Keith IF Aug 1968 Internal Nov 1971 exch 92/6 26

Youngster Dyson had established himself in the side in the first season of the seventies. He was an excellent schemer equally adept at creating as well as scoring goals.

Joe Harvey wanted Tony Green and Blackpool wanted Dyson in part-exchange but Harvey stated that he wanted to keep the Blackhill born player. In the end Joe relented and Dyson was rather unluckily on his way to the seaside.

Foggon Alan LW Nov 1967 Internal Aug 1971 £25,000 69/11 16

After establishing himself in the side during the second half of the 1968/69 season filling United's problem left wing Foggon never really lived up to his early promise.

The departure of Robson provided a route back in at the end of the 1970/71 season but he was off to Boro before the following campaign started where he fulfilled his potential and his kit to an ever increasing degree.

Mitchell Ian LW Jul 1970 £50,000 Oct 1971 exch 3/2 1

Twenty four year old Mitchell arrived on Tyneside with an excellent goalscoring pedigree for a winger.

Given very few opportunities in the first team he struggled to make an impact and soon moved back to Dundee in exchange for Alex Reid.

Robson Bryan IF Nov 1962 £75 Feb 1971 £120,000 243/1 97

Pop joined United as a 17 year old and made his debut a couple of years later. Small and stocky with an explosive shot he struggled to maintain his position in the side and looked likely to be shown the door.

Extra curricular training with father-in-law Len Hepple provided "Pop" with the extra pace and balance which enabled him to burst into form during the Fairs Cup winning season of 1968/69

United's long ball tactics and Euro failure in 1970/71 prompted Robson to launch an astonishing attack on the club in a personally arranged news conference. The patches didn't last long and Robson left for West Ham.

Tudor John IF Jan 1971 exch Oct 1976 £30,000 216/4 73

Replacing crowd favourite Robson was never going to be easy and Tudor took a while to win over the Gallowgate faithful. Hard working and with a decent scoring record he formed an excellent partnership with Supermac.

A bizarre pre-match routine and a Noddy Holder hairstyle couldn't hold him back but the arrival of Gordon Lee and Alan Gowling meant that he was frozen out.

Macdonald Malcolm CF May 1971 £180,000 Aug 1976 £333,333 257/1 138

From the day he made his arrival in a Rolls Royce until the day he departed back to The Smoke Malcolm Macdonald was big news on Tyneside and across the country.

Top scorer for 5 out of the 6 seasons he was at SJP he is one of the club's most prolific scorers even though he was playing at a time when goals were at a premium.

A lethal left foot, a decent right and brilliant in the air despite his comparative lack of height he was an all round finisher although his overall contribution to the team was often called into question.

Guthrie Chris CF Dec 1970 Internal Nov 1972 £10,000 4 0

A former England Youth and Schools player Ron Guthrie's brother Chris was tall (6' 1") and strong but with Macdonald and Tudor a virtually permanent fixture there were few opportunities for him to show his talents

Played only four times (on occasion in midfield) without scoring and was allowed to move on to Southend.

Busby Viv IF Dec 1971 loan Feb 1972 loan end 5 2

Twenty two year old Busby had partnered Supermac at Luton and with Tudor injured he was drafted in on trial.

Scored in both of his first two games before being laid low by illness. Unfortunately he returned to take part in United's Hereford horror which turned out to be his last game.

Robson Keith CF May 1971 Internal Sep 1974 £60,000 18 6

One of the many young strikers who struggled to get into the side during the dominance of Macdonald and Tudor. Born in Hetton-le-Hole he had all the physical attributes required for a centre-forward although he had a suspect temper.

Injuries to the front two gave him a number of opportunities in the 1973/74 season and he had a decent goals return. Moved to West Ham at the start of 1974/75.

Bruce Alex IF Jan 1974 £150,000 Sep 1975 exch 20/4 4

Little Scotsman who was signed from Preston for a considerable sum at the beginning of 1974; it is fair to say that he was one of Joe Harvey's more disappointing signings.

Often used as a midfielder and a regular sub he soon returned from whence he came in exchange for John Bird.

Hope George CF Apr 1972 Internal May 1975 Free 6 1

Played his first senior game in the 1973/74 season at Leicester at the age of 19. Followed that with a goal in his home debut against Man United in 1973/74, earning rave reviews in the process.

But that was to be the peak of his career at United and after making no further first team appearances in the following campaign he left for Charlton on a free.

Burns Micky F Jun 1974 £70,000 Aug 1978 £72,000 189/2 51

Signed just after the 1974 Cup Final, Burns made an excellent early impression but things soon turned sour as he publicly stated he'd "joined the wrong club" before storming out after a bust up with Harvey

Joe vowed he would never play for the first team again but it was Harvey who left and Burns - under the managership of Lee - whose career blossomed.

Took over the Number 9 shirt in the 1976/77 season and finished up top scorer however he was at the centre of the "player power" episode and became increasingly disillusioned after Dinnis' sacking. Moved to Cardiff as player-coach when United were relegated.

Cannell Paul F Jun 1972 Internal Feb 1978 £40,000 67/3 20

Geordie Cannell was the most successful of the home grown strikers who broke through during the seventies.

He played his first couple of games at the end of the 1973/74 season but his chances were limited until Supermac left.

He became a regular in the side during the 1976/77 season and a player who had occasionally been criticised for his extra-curricular activities in the past seemed to be making the most of his opportunity.

Claimed to be the lowest paid player in Division 1 at the end of that season and there were only 10 more games for him in the following campaign before he moved to the American league.
