Inside:

NUFC - 1960's Wingers

Right Wingers

Gordon Hughes - [1956 - 1963] - 143/0 - 20

Less than gargantuan Gordon (5' 6") was a stocky, pacy, direct right winger who had established himself in the side during the 1957/58 season.

He broke his leg during 1961/62 and by the time he'd recovered his path was blocked by both Dave Hilley and Alan Suddick. He was sold (at the age of 26) to Derby in August 1963

Ken Hodgson - [1959 - 1961] - 7 / 0 - 0

Geordie Hodgson was one of four players who deputised for Hughes on the right-flank during the 1960/61 season.

He had excelled in junior football but the 7 appearances he made during the relegation campaign were his only first team games before being sold to Scunthorpe in December 1961 for £3,000.

Terry Marshall - [1958 - 1961] - 5 / 0 - 1

Tiny Terry (5' 7") had joined from non-League Wisbech Town at the end of 1958 and at 5' 7" was one of the smallest players to wear the No 9 shirt

He got 2 games in his true position at the start of 1960/61 before returning from whence he came. Scored his only professional goal in his last outing

Billy Day - [1962 - 1963] - 14 / 0 - 1

Smog monster Day was born and bred in Middlesbrough and had played their for 7 years before he moved to Tyneside for £12,000 in March 1962 (at the age of 25)

He replaced Alan Suddick for the rest of the season but in the following campaign Suddick and new signing Hilley (covered in attackers) blocked his route into the side and he was sold to Peterborough.

Alan Suddick - [1961 - 1966] - 152 / 0 - 43

Chester-le-Street born Sugget played on both flanks and as an inside-forward, making his debut as a 17-year -old in the 1961/62 season.

Impudent ball-skills and lethal shooting were a potent mix and he won caps for England Youth and U23's. But he tended to drift out of games and when Harvey needed to raise funds crowd favourite Suddick was sacrificed.

Trevor Hockey - [1963 - 1965] - 56/ 0 - 3

Titchy Trevor (5' 6") was signed in November 1963 for £25,000

Vied with Pop Robson for the right wing berth but also appeared on the left flank and was used as a midfield man-marker on occasion in away games

Never quite fitted in and later enjoyed a lengthy nomadic career and an even more extensive growth of facial hair

Pop Robson - [1962 - 1971] - 243/ 1 - 97

Broke into the senior team during the promotion season and during the next 3 seasons he was a regular on either flank until his form dipped during 1967/68

Bounced back in the Fairs Cup season; half the time as an inside-right- where he formed a great partnership with Wyn Davies.

A power packed shot in both feet guaranteed an excellent scoring record but he shocked United in 1970/71 by holding a press conference to slam the club as being "unprofessional"

Stuart Alderson - [1965 - 1967] - 4/ 0 - 0

Bishop Auckland born Alderson was thrust into the side as United struggled at the start of the 1966/67 season.

He was allowed to leave for York at the end of that campaign.

Jim Scott - [1967 - 1970] - 92/6 - 12

Scott had just turned 27 when he arrived on Tyneside at the start of the 1967/68 season having served Hibs for almost a decade.

Harvey was looking for someone to supply Wyn Davies with crosses from the right flank and for two and a half seasons Jimmy was a regular in the side.

Relied on craft and skill rather than speed and had a habit of scoring in crucial games; including both the sem-final and the final of the Fairs Cup.

Jackie Sinclair - [1967 - 1969] - 48/ 4 - 8

Four months after signing Scott Harvey spent a near record £67,500 to bring in another Scottish winger: Jackie Sinclair. Lightning fast with a decent shot he could also play on either flank.

However he never really fulfilled his potential on Tyneside and didn't establish himself in the first eleven during the two years he spent at the club.

Left Wingers

Bobby Mitchell - [1949 - 1961] - 410 / 0 - 113

Now in his mid thirties Mitchell was not in the first team at the start of what was to be his last at Gallowgate. But with the team struggling he was recalled although he was used as an inside-left and even a left-half as well as on the flanks.

Even in his final season left-winger Bobby Mitchell was still providing value for money with six goals in fifteen games

Liam Tuohy - [1960 - 1963] - 42 / 0 - 9

Little Dubliner Liam (5' 7") arrived on Tyneside in May 1960 (at the age of 27) with a big reputation as a skilful left winger who could score regularly. He made a decent start with 3 goals in the first 9 games but was dropped after the 5-0 defeat at Arsenal and only returned for the last few games.

During 1961/62 he shared the left flank duties with Wilson and Fell but once Joe Harvey arrived (1962/63) he was used sparingly and he returned to Ireland before the start of the following season

Albert Scanlon - [1960 - 1962] - 27/0 - 6

A survivor of the Munich air crash Albert Scanlon was signed (aged 25) for a hefty £17,500 fee from Man United as Mitten continued his search for a worthy successor to Mitchell. He took over at No 11 from December 1960 and retained his place for the rest of the season.

Fast and direct rather than particularly skilful he only got one more game in the following campaign and was sold to Lincoln for a measly £2,000 in February 1962.

John Mitten - [1958 - 1961] 10 / 0 - 3

The manager's son John Mitten was one of five players tried on the left wing during the 1960/61. He had been capped for England at schools and youth level but hadn't really lived up to his early promise.

He only played twice and they would prove to be his last appearances before he went to Leicester on a free in October 1961.

George Luke - [1959 - 1961] 29 / 0 - 4

Local lad Luke had been on United's books as a teenager without getting a first team game and was now in his second spell at the club.

He only got 4 games during the 1960/61 season (as an inside-left) before he moved on to Darlington at the start of 1961.

James Wilson - [1959 - 1962] 13 / 0 - 2

Jaunty Jimmy (5' 6") was only 17-years-old when he travelled down from Scotland in September 1959

He deputised for both Hughes (on the right) and Tuohy (on the left) during the first 2 seasons of the decade before he returned to Scotland.

Jimmy Fell - [1962 - 1963] 53 / 0 - 17

Arrived on Tyneside towards the end of the 1961/62 season and replaced Tuohy in the side. In the following campaign he grabbed 16 goals to become joint top scorer.

His reward at the end of the campaign was a transfer to Walsall

Colin Taylor - [1963 - 1964] 36 / 0 - 7

Harvey replaced Fell with carrot topped Colin Taylor from Walsall who cost £20,000.

Nicknamed "Cannonball" as a result of his thunderous left-foot he shared the left flank duties with Alan Suddick before being allowed to return to The Midlanders in October of the promotion season.

Tommy Knox - [1965 - 1967] 25 / 1 - 1

Tommy was signed from Chelsea - where he had failed to establish himself - in February of the promotion season and was drafted straight in as a replacement for Suddick.

A winger of the tricky variety he lost out to Suddick and Robson during the following season and joined Mansfield in March.

Walker born Allen made his debut in the last game of the 1963/64 season aged only seventeen, but only got one more senior game in the next 2 years.

He had a short run in the side during 1966/67 and really seemed to have arrived when he turned in a virtuoso performance against Feyenoord in the Fairs Cup.

But he had struggled to keep fit and a few weeks later he was out again with an injury which would end his career at the age of 24.

Alan Foggon - [1965 - 1971] 69 / 11 - 16

Foggon had only played once before the 1968/69 season but the 18-year-old would play a full part in United's Fairs Cup success in the following season as he replaced the unlucky Allen.

A direct, strong running player he would never quite live up to his early form and left for Cardiff at the start of the 1971/72 season. Would later stretch the shirts of Middlesbrough, Sunderland and Hartlepools among others.

David Ford - [1969 - 1971] 28 / 3 - 3

Harvey's last attempt to solve his problem left side was David Ford who arrived in December 1969 in a swap deal that saw Jackie Sinclair move to Sheffield Wednesday

He had won England U23 honours whilst at Hillsbrough but his form suffered after he was involved in a serious road accident. Got a couple of short runs in the side but never did enough to retain his place long-term and returned to the United side of Sheffield.
