Cockney Brian Harvey was still in control of the green jersey at the start of the decade but the deluge of goals that United conceded in 1960/61 put paid to his United career; his last game coming in a 5-3 defeat at Leicester in February.
Scottish giant Herbert Garrow was only eighteen when he made his debut in the 3-1 defeat of Blackburn in November 1960. He played two more games; conceding five in the last one. He would only appear once more for the seniors (during the 1962/63 season) and never played professionally again.
Stewart Mitchell made his debut in 1954 but was a perennial reserve. Replaced Harvey for a couple of games until Mitten could find a replacement. Made a couple more appearances in the 1962/63 season before returning to his Scottish homeland.
Welsh U23 international Dave Hollins was signed for £11,000 from Brighton and immediately conceded 6 goals on his home debut. He remained as first choice 'keeper until the end of the 1962/63 season.
Having being called up as a full international Hollins thought he deserved higher wages but Joe Harvey was having none of it. The dispute rumbled on and as a result the welshman was never considered first choice again despite staying for another four years.
The Hollins dispute prompted Harvey to sign the well-built Gordon Marshall from Hearts and he retained the Number 1 jersey for the next 5 seasons. He made a solid start but after a while his consistency dropped and he was sold.
He was replaced in the 1968/69 season by young Irishman Iam McFaul who played a full part in United's Fairs Cup success of that campaign. He would remain as first choice until the mid 1970s
Shildon born Hope was signed as an understudy, but only got one game before he was allowed to leave for Sheffield United where he played over 60 times in three years.
