When United reached Wembley in 1974 they enlisted the help of local pub band "The Barrie Brothers" in the making of their Cup Final record "Howway the Lads".
Following their humiliating defeat against the scousers you may have expected them to keep a low profile. But things were to get worse, much worse.
The Evening Chronicle came up with the idea of releasing another record to allow the players to tell the supporters how much they appreciated them.
The a-side is bad enough. "United, Newcastle United" was written by Mike Mason (some of you may have heard of his son, Marilyn) and performed by Bobby Webber. The players allegedly helped with the chorus.
Flip the disc over and you get the Real McFaul [as well as Clark, Macdonald, Tudor, Hibbitt and Kenneddy] thanking the Toon Army for their support and promising to win a trophy (!!??)
It really takes football records to a new low. Tudor's scanning has to be heard to be believed and Mcfaul adopts an almost rap like approach.
And when Budgie Kenneddy stumbles over the words... well to hell with second takes.
While you are waiting you can peruse the wonderful "lyrics below.
Depending on the speed of your connection the track may take a little time to load, but I promise you that it is worth the wait.
If you want to hear it again press the [Yes Thank You] button; if you can't take any more, try the other one.
The Newcastle Evening Chronicle welcomes the skipper of Newcastle United, Frank Clark.
On behalf of the team I would like to thank the Evening Chronicle for giving us the chance to make this record. And you, the fans, for buying it.
I hope that we can win something this season to repay you for your wonderful support over the years. And now over to Malcolm.
Somebody said that we sang pretty well on the A-side, but not as well as all of you on a Saturday. I think they could be right.
But we're after winning a competition and getting into Europe. They tell me that that's when you Geordies are at your very best. I for one can't wait to hear it, especially our song "United United" coming from the terraces.
Well over to my fellow striker, John Tudor..... Follow that
Thanks Malcolm. I hope you like our team record, I'm glad we only have to sing the chorus. I don't think we have any budding .... Tony Bennetts ... in our lot.
Thanks for all your support and keep cheering; over to you Willie McFaul.
Cheers John. I only hope, we, can repay you, all or fans, for the tremendous welcome, home, that you gave us after Wembley.
Let's hope, we will be, a winning team next time, thank you all for your support. Terry Hibbitt is now coming to say a few words.
Well we missed out last season, but with any sort of luck I'm sure you will be cheering us at Wembley this time, and why not. And now over to Budgie Kenneddy
Thanks Terry. I can only say what the rest of the lads have already said and that is I hope yu..you enjoy our football this season. Thanks a million for your great support, keep coming and keep shouting.
