United's first signing from Middlesbrough came in August 1906. After spending less than a year on Teesside the little Jarrovian moved to United at the start of the 1906/07 season. Signed as an understudy to Gosnell young Duffy was a bun short of an oven and rarely got a look in. Moved on to Bury after two seasons.

The next Tees Tyne traveller fared even worse. Scotsman McCulloch was only at Middlesbrough for 12 months before he joined United for what was a sizeable fee for a 21 year old. He made his debut in the home game against Preston on March 11th. It turned out to be his last match too as he failed to last the year on Tyneside

Following a familiar pattern, Scotswood born outside right Gibson had only spent a year on the Tees where he was a regular member of the team before returning home. He was signed as cover for Rutherford but only managed a couple of games before he was sold on at the end of the campaign.

It was 13 years before United went shopping on Teesside again and they were after a winger once more, but this time they went for quality. Makem Urwin had already won his first England cap before he signed for United in August 1924. He arrived on Tyneside as a 25 year old and gave United great service over five seasons before moving to Sunderland .

Two months later United's board picked up Scottish right-back Alf Maitland who had fallen out with their Middlesbrough counterparts. Took a couple of seasons to establish himself in the first-team but then became a regular fixture in the team

Glaswegian who joined United at the age of 29 following two years on Teesside. He stayed at the club for six years although he didn't become a regular until the 1927/28 season. Gave four years excellent service on the Tyne

Devonian who made over 100 appearances for Boro before moving to United at the end of the 1937/38 season. Regular during the following campaign before Adolf prematurely ended his Tyneside career.

Stocky Northumbrian who starred for Middlesbrough during the War Years before being snapped up by Seymour at the start of the 1946/47 season. Served United well for three seasons before losing his place to George Robledo

Middlesbrough born right winger who played 131 times for the Teessiders before moving to United at the age of 25. He replaced youngster Suddick but in the following season Hilley or Suddick were preferred and he moved on at the end of the campaign.

Another Geordie exile who had been on Teesside for 6 years after signing apprentice forms at the age of 16. He had amassed over 100 games for Boro. Signed as a stop-gap he left at the end of the season but had the satisfaction of scoring the winning goal in three games.

Boam spent eight seasons on Teesside appearing almost 400 times. He joined United at the age of 30 after Irving Nattrass moved in the opposite direction. Tall and commanding he helped seal United's porous defence in the two years he was at the club.

Johnson Peter LB Oct 1980 £60,000 20 0

Boro reserve Peter Johnson had only played 42(1) times for Boro. He was Arthur Cox's first United signing and replaced Ian Davies in the Number 3 shirt. Lost his place after a few months and never played again. Left permanently at the end of the 1982/83 season after numerous loan spells

Stocky Johnny made a surprise return to Gallowgate at the age of 31 after amassing almost 500 appearances for Boro. Started as first-choice in 1982/83 before losing his place to Ando. Back in his understudy role he left for Darlington at the end of the season.
