United have won 39%, Middlesbrough 32% and 29% have been drawn.

The home/away balance is pretty normal with United winning over half their home matches but only a quarter of those on Teesside

There were no draws in the first fourteen meetings between the clubs and up to WW1 United were clearly the dominant club, registering wins in almost half the games whilst losing about a third.

Between the wars there was a proliferation of draws which brought the balance to 40/33/27. In the fifties and early sixties 'Boro had the upper hand and by 1963 both sides had secured 26 victories

Since then United have regained the ascendancy having lost only 4 of the last 27 meetings.

FA Cup

There have been four FA Cup clashes; the first four meetings between the two clubs. They have never met in the Cup since.

On the 21st January 1893 Newcastle United played their first competitive match under their new moniker when they took on fellow Northern Leaguers 'Boro in the FA Cup. The visitors won the game 3-2 in front of a crowd of 4,000.

Three seasons later they met again at SJP and United gained revenge by winning 4-1.

United were victorious again - this time in the first game at Ayresome Park - when they won 2-0 during the 1897/98 season.

The fourth cup meeting in nine seasons came in the 1900/01 season; the Teessiders emerging victorious this time .

League Cup

The League Cup meetings have also been crammed together with the sides being drawn together three times in six seasons.

In 1990/91 United bowed out 2-1 on aggregate after losing the away leg 2-0 at Ayresome Park.

Two years later Keegan's side emphasised their Premiership credentials by winning 3-1 at Middlesbrough after a goalless draw at SJP.

In 1996/97 there was no repeat performance as United slumped to a 3-1 defeat at The Riverside.

Firsts

United's first ever game was a friendly against Middlesbrough on 24th December 1892. The first ever competitive game was also against the Teessiders a month later when they met in the FA Cup.

The first League meeting took place at SJP on 18th October 1902; the visitors winning 1-0.

Controversy

True to form United's first ever competitive fixture (FA Cup match of 1892-93) proved highly controversial. After the game there were allegations that United's players had been bribed to lose and an official enquiry ensued which resulted in the trainer and two players being disciplined.

Claims were also made that the match was "squared" when United drew 1-1 at Ayresome Park at the end of the 1909-10 season. Boro were one of a number of teams battling against the drop whilst United were coasting towards the Cup Final.

Reports indicated that United "were obviously disinclined to exert themselves unduly" whilst the homesters "were utterly incapable of finding the goal". In the end Middlesbrough equalised ten minutes from time.

This time a commission decided that nothing untoward had taken place.

Eight months later and Joe Harvey had returned to the club as manager. He was still looking for his first win after a defeat at Ayresome Park and two draws

Arthur Lightening was making his debut between the sticks for Boro having signed from Coventry.

In the first half it was a fairly even game and there was all to play for at 2-1 to United. But a third early in the second half for Newcastle turned the game and it was one way traffic after that.

During the same campaign they also lost 5-0 at Sunderland and suffered some other hefty home reverses: Portsmouth [4-7], Derby [2-5], Liverpool [0-4]. Somehow they managed to avoid relegation.

Attendances

The highest attendance for a game between the two clubs was recorded in the 1948/49 season when 64,381 turned up on the 15th April to see United record a narrow 1-0 victory.

The highest crowd at Middlesbrough was recorded a few months later when, on the 27th December 1949, 53,802 attended Boro's 1-0 victory. This is Middlesbrough's record attendance and is the only time that a 50,000 plus attendance watched a Tees-Tyne derby.

The lowest crowds were recorded in the pre WW1 period; the lowest Post War crowds were for the 1990/91 Rumbelow Cup matches when the two legs attracted an aggregate of less than 28,000.

Managers

Jack Charlton cut his managemental teeth on Teesside where he gained promotion to Division 1 at the first attempt. He stayed for n years before resigning. Jack took over at United following Arthur Cox's resignation. He stayed a year before deciding he was not wanted.

The day after Jim Smith resigned as United manager he joined Middlesbrough as assistant to Colin Todd.

Former United manager Graeme Souness was one of Charlton's clan and gained notoriety on Tyneside for a disgraceful challenge on Tommy Craig during the Tees Tyne derby
