Highest Score - Newcastle 13 Newport 0 [Div2 - October 5th:1946/47]

United had made a reasonable start to the first season after the war but the new-look forward line hadn't really clicked as yet. Milburn, Bentley, Waymann and Pearson were joined by record signing Len Shackleton (Stobbart stepping down).

Newport had won one of their first six, conceding twenty three goals in the process including seven in their last match. At SJ they survived a first minute penalty but still managed to concede seven by half-time. Shackleton was credited with six, Wayman four, Milburn two and Bentley one. Best Win - Newport H Newcastle 13 Newport 0 [Div 2 - October 5th:1946/47]

Not surprisingly this mis-match is also United's record win in a competitive match, the biggest win ever recorded in the top two divisions, and the equal biggest win in the League.

It was an excellent display, but it is fair to say that Newport - who had hardly played during the war years - were completely disorganised. The Journal summed up the match as follows.

"Taking Saturday's game as seriously as possible, Shackleton produced grand incisiveness, and the inter-change of position in the forward line generally put the play immediately on a higher plane than for some time"

Best Away Win - Everton 0 Newcastle 6 [Div 1 October 26th:1912/13]

Newcastle's Edwardian dominance was fading away and 1912/13 was a disappointing season in which The Magpies as they finished in the bottom half of the table for the first time in a decade. Their main problem was a lack of goals, the away match at Goodison Park proved an exception.

Everton had finished runners up in the previous season but had lost two of their opening three matches and were in 11th, United had lost only once and were in 4th. Stewart, McTavish and Low all scored two as United romped home. The win took The Magpies into second, but they were to fade badly and The Toffemen finished three places higher in eleventh.

Best Away Win - Walsall 0 Newcastle 6 [Div 2 September 29th:1962/63]

Joe Harvey was in his first season in charge and after a slow start United had won three in a row in the League. Goals from Fell, Kerray, Thomas 2, Suddick and Hilley gave United a comfortable victory; but the result had as much to do with the Midlanders comic defending as Newcastle's attacking play.

The scoreline could have been a lot worse; five other shots were cleared off the line and a host of other chances were squandered. United missed out on promotion as they faded towards the end of the season. The collapse was summed up by the penultimate game of the season; a 2-0 defeat at home by Walsall.

Best Away Win - Man Utd 1 Newcastle 7 [Div 1 September 10th :1927/28]

Champions Newcastle had made another good start to the season and were in a confident mood when they travelled to Old Trafford for a game watched by a 50,000 crowd. Man Utd were also unbeaten. United dominated the match and led 2-0 at the interval.

In the second period Man Utd pulled one back, but Newcastle replied with five more of their own. Six players shared the goals: Seymour (2), McDonald, Gallagher, McKay, Urwin and Harris United finished the season in a disappointing ninth, The Mancunians were one point above the relegation spot.

Best Away Win - Notts C 1 Newcastle 7 [LC October 5th :1993/94]

"The Entertainers" tag had just been pinned to United and there were already 4-1 ahead on aggregate when they took on First Division Notts County at Meadow Lane. It was a game that really got United noticed throughout the country.

They turned on a display of devastating attacking football which simply crushed their hosts. A brace from Malcolm Allen and one from Beardsley put Newcastle well in control by half-time. However despite leading by six goals on aggregate they kept the pedal to the matal and scored four more through an Andy Cole hat-trick and Rob Lee.

Worst Defeat - Burton 9 Newcastle 0 [April 15th:1894/95]

United were in only their second season in the League and were ending the season in miserable style; losing seven of their last nine matches. They were especiallly bad away from home, losing twelve out of fifteen on their travels. The last game of the season took them to Burton to play the Wanderers.

In front of a crowd of only 3000 United were comprehensively beaten by a side that would slip out of the League for ever a couple of seasons later. Seven of the nine goals were scored by brothers Art and Andrew Capes

No less than eight of the team never played for the club again. Goalkeeper Ward was one of the three survivors, but he only got one more game.

Worst Home Defeat - Newcastle 1 Sunderland 9 [December 1908/09]

One of the blackest days in the club's history. Newcastle were second in the table and had conceded only thirteen goals in fifteen games. Their home record was won seven, lost one.

The home defeat against Villa persuaded the directors to perform major surgery on the team, replacing half the team. The reshaped team returned from the City Ground with a 4-0 victory, but in the next game at home to Sunderland the tables were not so much turned as smashed to smithereens. The scores were equal at half-time but eight goals in half an hour; including six in only ten minutes made for a sensational scoreline

It set a League record for a home defeat that has only ever been equalled once. To many it was an inexplicable event; although the Sunderland Echo put it down to the fact that "it was quite evidently due to their being useless".

United had the last laugh though; they won ten out of their next eleven matches and went on to finish as champions. They also conceded less than any other team.
