Gary Kelly started the season between the sticks but was dropped after the League Cup defeat at Blackpool. But replacement Martin Thomas fractured his shoulder in the second leg and the little Irishman returned for the rest of the season.

The right back slot was shared between Neil McDonald (when not used in right midfield) and John Anderson.. On the left John Bailey had a torrid time in the first 3 games and was dropped. Kenny Wharton got the nod after that with Brian Tinnion stepping in when the Blakelaw boy was used in midfield.

Peter Jackson and Glenn Roeder formed the centre-back partnership although Anderson was preferred to Jacko towards the end of the season

Gazza and McCreery were the regular members of the midfield. Darren Jackson and Neil McDonald were used on the right with Paul Stephenson getting only limited opportunities.

New signing Glyn Hodges started at Number 11 but only managed 7 games before being sold to Watford. After that we had both Kenny Wharton and John Cornwell

Up front Paul Goddard did his best to partner Mirandinha but it was young Irishman Michael O'Neill who grabbed the headlines in the second half of the season and finished up as top scorer.
